Why Timely Autism and ADHD Diagnosis Matters

Recent research from Bournemouth University has drawn attention to the mental health impact of long waiting times for autism diagnosis. For many clinicians, families and individuals, this will not come as a surprise, but it is nonetheless sobering to see the data reflect what so many have been experiencing.
Throughout my career as a Clinical Psychologist, I have worked with children, young people and adults who have described feeling different, misunderstood, or unsure why certain aspects of life felt more effortful than they seemed to for others. For some, exploring whether autism or ADHD may be part of their story has brought an enormous sense of clarity. Not because a diagnosis changes who someone is, but because it can offer language, validation and context.
Understanding oneself through a neurodevelopmental lens can be deeply relieving. It can soften years of self-criticism and help families shift from confusion to compassion. I have witnessed this both professionally and personally.
The Impact of Waiting
Across Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, families are often facing extended waiting times for NHS autism assessments and ADHD assessments. During this period of uncertainty, many people are left in limbo, aware that something does not quite fit but without access to a clear pathway forward.
For children, this can mean struggling in school without appropriate adjustments. For adults, it may look like workplace stress, burnout, or long-standing anxiety that has never fully made sense. For parents, it can feel like advocating tirelessly without the documentation required to secure support.
A diagnosis is not the destination. Timely recognition can open doors to understanding, accommodations and appropriate care.
Why I Chose to Offer Private Assessments
My decision to offer private autism assessments and private ADHD assessments at Lyndon House Clinic in Sutton Coldfield was not rooted in a wish to want to respond differently. It has enabled us to offer a reduced waiting time for autism and ADHD diagnosis, while also being able to provide the depth and breadth that is required for the validity of an assessment process.
Neurodevelopmental assessment is not a single appointment or a checklist. It is a careful process of listening, observing and drawing together information across the lifespan. It requires time to understand early development, education, relationships, strengths, challenges, coping strategies and lived experience. It involves clinical interviews, standardised tools and thoughtful formulation.
From early childhood through to adulthood, we support individuals at different stages of their journey. Whatever brings someone through the door, our aim remains consistent: to offer clarity, thoughtful understanding and guidance about what may help next.
A Reflective Note on Private Fees
Questions about cost are entirely understandable. In the UK, we are fortunate to have the National Health Service, and many of us grow up expecting healthcare to be free at the point of access. When private assessment is considered, it can understandably raise questions.
What is often less visible is the clinical time, specialist training, supervision, insurance, governance and administrative structure required to deliver a comprehensive, evidence-based autism or ADHD assessment in line with national guidance. Robust neurodevelopmental assessments involve multiple appointments, careful scoring and interpretation of standardised tools, detailed report writing and thorough feedback sessions.
These are not brief screening conversations. Accuracy and ethical practice require depth.
As a team, we have reflected carefully on how to balance accessibility with maintaining clinical standards. We believe that assessments should be thorough enough to provide clarity and confidence, both for the individual and for the systems that may rely on the report, such as schools, universities or employers. Our intention is not to offer the quickest assessment possible, but ones that are carefully considered and defensible.
Supporting Families in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham and the West Midlands
At Lyndon House Clinic, we support families and adults seeking private autism assessment and private ADHD assessment across Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, Lichfield, Tamworth, Solihull and the wider West Midlands.
Choosing to pursue a private diagnosis is a significant and personal decision. For some, it is about reducing uncertainty. For others, it is about accessing educational support, workplace adjustments, or simply understanding themselves more fully.
Whatever the reason, we approach each assessment with respect for the courage it takes to ask these questions in the first place.
Moving Forward
The conversation about autism, ADHD and waiting lists is unlikely to resolve quickly at a systemic level. At an individual level, however, timely recognition can make a meaningful difference.
- Understanding can replace confusion.
- Compassion can replace self-blame.
- Clarity can create space for appropriate support.
If you are considering a private autism assessment or private ADHD assessment in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham or the West Midlands, you are welcome to make contact and explore whether this feels like the right next step for you or your family.
